Thomas Massie loses Kentucky Republican House primary to Trump-backed challenger.

In a significant display of influence within the Republican Party, Donald Trump successfully backed Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, in defeating seven-term incumbent Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s fourth congressional district primary. This victory underscores Trump’s sway over the party, emphasizing loyalty to his agenda over independent stances. Massie, known for his libertarian views, often clashed with Trump on issues like military actions and government spending, which ultimately led to Trump’s aggressive campaign to unseat him.

The elections coincided with primary contests in five other states, marking a pivotal primary night. In Georgia, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and billionaire Rick Jackson advanced to a runoff in the gubernatorial race, sidelining Brad Raffensperger, a known Trump critic. The winner will face Democratic nominee and former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Meanwhile, in Alabama, Trump supporter Tommy Tuberville secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, while former Senator Doug Jones emerged as the Democratic contender. In Pennsylvania, primary outcomes in key House races could influence the November balance of power, with Democrats selecting Chris Rabb in a race reflecting internal party dynamics.

Trump’s endorsement power was further highlighted in Texas, where he backed scandal-plagued Attorney General Ken Paxton against incumbent John Cornyn for the Senate, stirring discontent within the party. Meanwhile, Senator Bill Cassidy, who had opposed Trump previously, lost his primary in Louisiana to Trump-endorsed Julia Letlow. These developments reflect Trump’s continued hold on Republican candidates’ fortunes.

Massie, whose independent approach included advocating for transparency and challenging government secrecy, conceded to Gallrein after a campaign characterized by personal attacks from Trump. Gallrein ran on a platform of unwavering support for Trump’s agenda, accusing Massie of deviating from Trump’s Make America Great Again movement. The contest in Kentucky’s fourth district became the most expensive House primary to date, with spending reaching $25.6 million, fueled by attack ads from a Super PAC supporting Gallrein.

Gallrein is now positioned as the frontrunner in the general election in a district that has remained Republican for two decades. Additionally, Trump-backed candidate Andy Barr secured a win in a contested Republican primary for Senate in Kentucky, aiming to succeed retiring Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, further cementing Trump’s influence in the state’s political landscape.
