South African jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant contributions to promoting human rights and strengthening international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended Pillay for her enduring efforts in defending human rights, highlighting her work during South Africa’s apartheid era, her involvement in international criminal tribunals, and her leadership as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Pillay, who also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, was recognized for her role in a report that concluded Israel had committed genocidal acts in Gaza. This report, released in September 2025, suggested an intent to destroy Palestinians in the area, a claim that Israel has strongly rejected, accusing the commission of bias and criticizing Pillay after the Nobel announcement.

The Nobel Committee emphasized how Pillay’s career exemplifies the potential of legal institutions and universal legal principles in preventing violence and resolving conflicts. Her independent and expert stance has been credited with bolstering the institutions of international law.

Pillay, 85, received news of her Nobel accolade while among human rights lawyers and jurists in Nuremberg, Germany. She expressed surprise at the honor, reaffirming the importance of impartial evidence examination and legal application throughout her distinguished career.

With an extensive background, Pillay has served as a judge on international criminal tribunals and as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She is also involved in proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning genocide allegations against Myanmar.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa lauded the award, acknowledging Pillay’s profound impact on peace, human dignity, and justice. Human rights advocates have similarly emphasized her pivotal role in advancing accountability for serious international crimes, including genocide and sexual violence.

This prestigious award underscores Pillay’s decades-long dedication to international law and brings renewed attention to the critical role legal institutions play in safeguarding human rights and addressing global atrocities.
