A federal judge has mandated that the Trump administration disclose details about the individuals responsible for designing a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund intended for those who claim to have been victims of political prosecution. This order, issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis, is part of a lawsuit challenging the existence of the fund, brought forth by Democracy Forward on behalf of several plaintiffs. Among these plaintiffs are a former federal prosecutor and a college professor who was acquitted of charges stemming from a protest against an immigration raid.
Though the Justice Department announced last month that the proposed fund had been shelved, former Justice Department official Todd Blanche confirmed the program was effectively defunct, having never been operational. The controversial compensation initiative initially stemmed from a settlement involving President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. Concerns were raised that the fund might have offered compensation to individuals prosecuted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, along with others.
The proposal faced criticism from lawmakers across the political spectrum, including Republican senators, who questioned its legitimacy and potential implications. Despite the administration’s decision to abandon the fund, some critics remain skeptical about whether the program could be revived in some form. Additionally, a separate ruling in July concluded that Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS lacked a genuine legal dispute and was primarily used to justify the settlement that laid the groundwork for the proposed fund.
President Trump has expressed disappointment over the discontinuation of the program, asserting that some individuals were treated unfairly. The recent court order aims to uncover more information about the fund’s creation and explore if there are any intentions to pursue similar compensation through alternative avenues.
