Taiwan’s opposition leader, Cheng Li-wun, has expressed her readiness to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump during her forthcoming visit to the United States. She emphasized that engaging with leaders who can foster regional peace and stability is a priority for her.
Before embarking on her two-week trip to the U.S., Cheng highlighted the significance of having discussions with influential global figures to advance peace initiatives. She indicated that her openness to meeting Trump aligns with the principles that steered her recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
While in the United States, Cheng plans to meet with U.S. lawmakers and government officials, including making a stop in Washington. However, she chose not to disclose specifics about the meetings she has planned.
Cheng expressed optimism regarding the recent improvements in U.S.-China relations, hoping that increased dialogue among major powers could alleviate regional tensions. She also addressed Taiwan’s security policy, asserting that while strengthening defense capabilities is vital, engaging in communication with Beijing is also crucial to prevent military conflict and ensure stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Her visit occurs amidst ongoing discussions in Taiwan concerning defense spending and cross-strait relations. Opposition parties are advocating for a strategy that balances military readiness with diplomatic efforts.
