Google Revamps Search with AI; Reintroduces Smart Glasses

In a significant shift towards integrating artificial intelligence, Google has unveiled major updates to its search engine, incorporating advanced AI capabilities into its search bar. Announced at the Google I/O annual conference, these enhancements allow for more complex and conversational search queries, directing users to interact directly with Google’s chatbot. Central to this development is the newly introduced AI model, Gemini 3.5, which is set to transform how users engage with Google’s search interface by providing longer text predictions and more visual search results. These updates mark the most substantial transformation in Google Search’s nearly three-decade history, as stated by Elizabeth Reid, head of the product.

The rollout of these AI-driven changes is global, available on both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search. The updated search experience will present users with a visually enriched interface, resembling AI Overviews with bulleted summaries rather than traditional lists of links. Users, however, can still opt for the classic search format through a “Web” tab. Google’s move towards AI-enhanced search is reflected in the growing popularity of its “AI Mode,” which has seen a doubling of chatbot-specific queries every quarter since its introduction a year ago.

Google’s push into AI is further exemplified by its goal to create a “universal assistant” through the Gemini app, which already boasts 900 million monthly users. This ambition is evident in the introduction of “information agents” for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, providing autonomous research and summary capabilities. Additionally, the “generative user interface” feature will allow users to create personalized visuals and interactive elements, while the Gemini Spark agent will integrate with Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google services to assist with various tasks.

Meanwhile, Google is revisiting the concept of smart glasses, partnering with companies like Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster to launch a range of intelligent eyewear. Expected to hit the market in the fall, these glasses will feature voice command capabilities to interact with Gemini and built-in cameras for capturing photos and videos. This initiative echoes a broader industry trend, as seen with Meta’s collaboration with EssilorLuxottica on similar augmented reality glasses since 2021. Google’s renewed venture into eyewear comes nearly a decade after its first attempt with Google Glass, which faced significant backlash and was discontinued shortly after its release.

Overall, Google’s latest announcements highlight its strategic pivot towards AI-powered tools and devices, aiming to extend its reach beyond tech-savvy circles to a broader consumer audience. The integration of AI into its core search product and the reimagining of smart eyewear underscore Google’s commitment to evolving its technology offerings in response to shifting market dynamics and consumer expectations.
